Port Lincoln Golf Report

This is it folks, all that practice over the previous weeks led all to this moment. Port Lincoln’s Golf and Seafood Week is here with competitions played from Monday to Saturday with a few players bold enough to put their name down to play six days straight. None of this would have been possible though without the support of the week’s sponsors in Bendigo Bank, Fleurieu Milk Co, SA Plumbing, D&L Weatherspoon, Sarin Group, Quinn Transport, Port Lincoln Hotel, Mojos Takeaway, West End and the Port Lincoln Council.

The EP Open was contested on Saturday, eighteen holes of Stroke with 120 players taking to the field. Men were separated over three grades while women had played over two separate divisions. Adam Hage was announced victorious in A Grade after he and Codey Marchesi competed in a play off after each player came in after shooting 75 off the stick. James Blewitt was able to take the victory on the Nett side of things with his score of 71 just one shot clear of both Josh Hausler and Dan Brown. B Grade saw Rick Kolega take the spotlight after entering the clubhouse with 83 off the stick. He was five shot clear of the play off for second place where Luke Gardner was able to survive the pressure to get past Brett Baker. Jason Verhees took out the Nett aspect with his score of 72, just ahead of Tom Dawson and his score of 73. Haydon Manning made the most of the conditions to score 93 off the stick in order to take out C Grade. David Norman was able to find himself in second position with his score of 95. Lachlan Jenkins came out of the clouds in order to score the upset victory in C Grade’s Nett competition, his score of 72 too much for John O’Donohoe and his score of 75.

Reeta Devi found herself at the top of Division One with nothing but clear air behind her. After shooting 80 off the stick, victory was assured. Libby Dolphin did her best to close the gap but to no avail, securing her spot in second after she shot 89. Jo Higgins was able to take out the Nett competition with her score of 75. Division Two saw Kay Freeth put on a show with her score of 101 a whopping twelve clear of Patricia White. Annette Ballard and her score of 87 was enough to take out the Nett side of things.

While Norm Marks, Brock Wise, Jeffrey Doyle, Mark Butt, Mark Rowett, Lyn Hosking, Mabel Crouch, Aide Fraser, Kaye Jaensch and Liz Weatherspoon had all been leading their respective grades after the first day of the 36 Hole Championship, that was as far as it was able to go. Torrential rain on the second day caused the competition to come to an unfortunate end without winners being decided.

Wednesday saw both men and women take part in a Stableford competition. Mitchell Garrett made his statement in A Grade, topping the leaderboard with 39 points. Michael Hegarty and Codey Marchesi were not too far behind with their scores of 37. B Grade saw Tim Provis ascend the mountain and stand at the peak with 37 points, two clear of Chris Cottrell. Two points between first and second was accurate again in C Grade where Michael Kenny’s score of 37 was too much for David Norman and his score of 35.

It was a tight affair in the women’s competition where Kay Freeth was able to hold on to victory with her score of 33. Tight on her heels were both Dione Heppell and Enza Francavilla who each scored 32 points.

Stableford was also played by the men on Tuesday where Norm Marks marched his way to victory with a well earned 39 points. Daniel Townsend and Haydn Myers fought for second place after both scored 35 points. Barry Chapman claimed the crown in B Grade with his score of 34 enough to keep Garry Downey, Tim Provis and Darcy McCloy at bay after all three scored 32. Anthony Manuel mauled the competition in C Grade after submitting his score of 37, a whopping seven shots clear of his nearest competitor in Brenton George.

Canadian Foursomes was the name of the game on Tuesday as the women took part in teams of two. In Division One, the team of Cindy Carr and Helen George were able to put together a well played Nett score of 72.75 to secure victory. Close behind was the team of Lyn Hosking and Jill Arcus with their score of 74.12. Kaye Jaensch and Roslyn Brunton were able to work together to take out Division Two with their team score of 80.75. Less than a shot away was the team of Cynthia Thompson and Margaret Jenkins with their score of 81.37.

The start of the week saw twenty-eight teams take part in a bit of light entertainment through an Ambrose competition. Highlights included the team of Mike Freeman, Rob Humphries, Caitlin Williams and Jack Humphries who took out the Men’s Nett competition with a score of 55.25 while the Mixed Nett competition was taken out by the team of Reeta Devi, Corey Stephens, Dan Brown and Emily Amber with their score of 58.375.
