Port Lincoln Golf Report
With the course looking in immaculate shape, players took to the golf course in large numbers this week. With Sports Power Port Lincoln sponsoring the week, ninety men took part in the Monthly Medal on Saturday. The best Nett score of the day was to be found in B Grade as Juri Berzins bettered his handicap by a whopping four shots to score 68. It was just enough as he had Chris McGown breathing down his neck, finishing with 69. A Countback was required in A Grade and while Daniel Brown had the better score off the stick, it was Tyron George who took top place after both men had scores of 69. Wayne Smith found it easy going in C Grade, his score of 69 had him leaps and bounds ahead of the competition where Kieren Cook was best of the rest with 73.
Stableford was the game of the day for the women, Helen George top scoring with 38 points back to her name while Heather Darley just snuck past Cynthia Thompson for second after both women scored 35.
Thursday’s Ladies competition was played under Stroke terms and saw Libby Dolphin rise to the occasion. Her Nett score of 71 was three shots clear of Michelle Smith and her score of 74, while Cynthia Thompson was a further shot off the pace.
Wednesday’s Stableford competition saw some major divides between the winners and the rest of the field. Trevor Durdin had a breezy time in A Grade, his score of 41 well clear of the rest of the pack. Clinton Scharfe claimed second place on a countback over Warren Rosman with both men scoring 35. B Grade had an even larger deficit as Rex Bichard had the score of the week with 43 points to his name. He was a mammoth eight shots clear of a wall of players who scored 35 points. They were Brian Henson, Bob Ford, Juri Berzins, Chris Cottrell and Phil Hyde. C Grade saw Brenton George take the win with his score of 36. Mark Rowett had him in his sights but was unable to close the gap, finishing with 34 points.
Sunday’s Stableford competition saw Sebastian Kelling win on a countback over Michael Freeman, both of them ending the day with 36 points to their name.
As a bit of bonus news, I regret to inform you all that I allowed a highlight to slip by without acknowledging it last week. I would like to give my congratulations to Tyson Dodd who, on Wednesday the 21st of October, secured what all golfers dream of. On the 9th hole, he was able to put a 1 on his scorecard, his shot an absolute pearler off the tee and was to be found in the bottom of the cup. Congratulations Tyson on your hole in one!
